The Phi Kappa Theta Men of Excellence program recognizes Brothers of our Fraternity who have demonstrated deep commitment and passionate embodiment of our four beloved ideals: Fraternal, Intellectual, Social and Spiritual.

Professional and Business Success

  • Four-year starting quarterback at Ohio Northern University - set 17 game, season, and career passing records.
  • Signed with the Oakland Raiders (NFL) 1974 - first player in history of ONU to sign professional football contract. Played briefly with Chicago Fire (WFL) 1974 and Winnipeg Blue Bombers (CFL) 1975 & 1976.
  • Assistant Head Football Coach 1979 - Gardner-Webb University - #7 nationally ranked passing offense - Quarterback Chip Stuart - 2-time Division 2 All-American.
  • Readers Digest QSP National "Rookie of the Year" - QSP Hall of Fame - QSP Sales Manager of the Year - TV Guide School Plan Charter Member - Nasco, Inc. Manager of the Year - Nestle Sales Manager.
  • Celebrating 28 successful years (1980-2008) in Youth Fundraising.
  • Currently General Manager and National Sales Manager - American Publishers Hearst.

Civic Involvement and Service

  • Children's Miracle Network - "Support the Miracle"
  • World Hunger Year - founded by Harry Chapin - WHY Volunteer
  • Plant It 2020 - founded by John Denver - AP Hearst "Go Green" Initiative
  • Operation Respect - Peter Yarrow - Fostering respect & dignity in children worldwide.
  • Board of Directors - Carthage, MO Powers History Museum.

Family, Education, and Interests

  • Married to Jalon Smith.
  • J.C. has four (4) children (Jeff, Jessica, Brian, Greg).
  • Undergraduate Degree - Health & Physical Education - Ohio Northern University 1974.
  • Masters Degree - Special Education - California State University PA 1977.
  • J.C. enjoys sports, exercise, music, travel, and poetry.
