Be part of the first ever "Phi Kap Service Team” in Guatemala

By Stephen Lee
Lewis University, ‘10

impactlee17You're invited to join other Phi Kaps in Guatemala to help children and families break the cycle of poverty.

As a volunteer, you can construct homes and classrooms, play with children and explore.

In July 2017, I explored Guatemala and saw firsthand the impact of International Samaritan (IntSam).

It was an eye-opening experience. Many people live in "dumpster communities”, which are basically clusters of shacks within steps of major landfills.

While an adult works in the landfill (earning about $1 US Dollar per day), the children are left to themselves. This makes them susceptible to crime and gang recruitment.

That’s where IntSam comes in. They enlist volunteers like you to build schools and educate the youth in an effort to improve lives and break the cycle of poverty.

impactlee17The children I interacted with were bright and happy, thanks to IntSam and all their volunteers.

In my week-long assignment, I observed ten high school students from St. Charles Preparatory School, a Catholic high school in Columbus, Ohio.

These students volunteered for a week, building the foundation for a new classroom. Their work was physical, exhausting and very rewarding.

Beck French, a high school junior, said, "This trip really shaped my character. Seeing the garbage dumps, I’ve learned that the problems we face in America are very different from the problems people face every day in Guatemala.”

After each day’s work, the group relaxed and slept in a beautiful monastery in Antigua, Guatemala, also a hotspot for international tourists.

IntSam needs more volunteers like you. Volunteers who want to make an impact and experience a different part of the world.

Now is your opportunity to be part of the first ever Phi Kappa Theta volunteer group to help the people of Guatemala. IntSam will take care of all the planning and logistics.
