A Statement From The Brothers of Phi Kappa Theta Fraternity

The events of the last two weeks have weighed heavily on us as we have watched and experienced acts of racial injustice impact the communities in which our members live and work, as well as the campus communities in which we learn. Our collective hearts go out to the family of George Floyd and all who have met with injustice.

Racial injustice must end now. As servant leaders, Phi Kappa Theta Brothers stand for justice for all, not just for the few of privilege.

Phi Kappa Theta founded as a result of discrimination against people of the Catholic faith, and our organization cannot condone discrimination of any form. It is precisely our faith, and our core values that demand justice is served, and voices are heard. We remain committed to fighting racism and discrimination in all forms.

Our fraternity is wonderfully diverse, and we know our members are dealing with the fallout from racial injustice and the acts of both peaceful and non-peaceful demonstrations. At the same time, we acknowledge our challenges and shortcomings and pledge to identify and eliminate any form of discrimination within our brotherhood. Additionally, our educational curriculum already focuses on existing in a global and diverse society. We are now committed to incorporating more specific attention to enhancing our brothers’ cultural competence.

For our brothers who have been victims of such acts, whether, in the past two weeks or ever, we stand in solidarity with you and send you care and love. Through fraternity, we become brothers and servant leaders. It is through standing up to what is wrong and demonstrating these ideals that we enact the values of the Phi, the Kappa, and the Theta.

We encourage our brothers to stand up and advocate against racism, bigotry, violence, and intolerance in a safe and productive manner. We also urge our members to explore ways to support their friends who have experienced racism and discrimination of all forms. Phi Kappa Theta is an incubator of transformative leadership, and we want to put that leadership to work by helping heal our broken communities, nation, and world.

Now more than ever, it is crucial to reflect on how Phi Kappa Theta will become part of the solution.
