University of Pittsburgh Chapter Suspended

Recently, the Phi Kappa Theta Board of Trustees suspended our Pennsylvania Mu Chapter at the University of Pittsburgh. This action came after an anonymous hazing allegation was reported to the University Police. Our Fraternity expects our members to reflect and embrace our values from Associate Membership through Alumni Brotherhood. Thus, we take all allegations of hazing very seriously, as there is no place in our Associate Member Education experience for this behavior.

We are committed to working with University of Pittsburgh staff and administration to conduct proper investigations. Once this process has been completed, we will be taking the appropriate and necessary actions with the chapter and its membership to prevent future incidents.

Phi Kappa Theta expects its brothers to reflect and embrace our values. Our chapter at the University of Pittsburgh has been suspended. We take all allegations of hazing seriously and are committed to working with university officials. Once this process is completed, we will take the appropriate and necessary action.

Brother Sean Stephenson Passes

INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA | Friday, August 30, 2019 – It is with a heavy heart that we share that our dear Brother, Sean Stephenson (DePaul '01), has passed away last night. He had suffered a head injury and did not make it through his emergency surgery.

Over the last two decades, Brother Stephenson had influenced thousands of Phi Kappa Theta brothers through his inspiring keynote speeches and countless life lessons. He was a personal mentor to so many. He will be remembered as a man determined to live a life of purpose by inspiring confidence in others and ultimately improving the world around him.

Brother Stephenson was the inaugural recipient of the John F. Kennedy Award during the 2017 Biennial Convention. Here is the introduction of his acceptance speech of that Award.

He had that special light, a spark to always improve the lives of others. How appropriate that he was the inaugural recipient of our John F. Kennedy award. In life and now in perpetuity Sean inspires all of us not to accept circumstances as they seem, to achieve our dreams and to serve others.

Sean Stevenson never met a challenge he couldn’t overcome. His final words are perhaps the crowning jewel in his dogged commitment to excellence and an equally strong commitment to never letting bumps in the road turn into walls. Even this final wall was surmountable according to his last words. … "This happened for me. It didn't happen to me.”

Brother STEPHENSON meant many things to us all. Coach, comedian, sounding board, task master, visionary, brother, friend. His love for everything Phi Kappa Theta… the heartfelt stories he shared with many of us, the challenges he offered us, the genuine, loving perspective he modeled… will all be with us forever.

Brother Keith Harshbarger Announces Departure

INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA | April 15, 2019 – Phi Kappa Theta Fraternity announces the departure of its Director of Brand Management, Keith Harshbarger.

Keith Harshbarger (National at Large ‘06) has recently accepted an opportunity with Conner Prairie, one of Indiana’s premier outdoor destinations for families, as a member of their creative team. Conner Prairie is Indiana’s first Smithsonian affiliate, and one of the most visited outdoor museums in the country. Brother Harshbarger will be serving as their Social Media and Communications Specialist. Keith is a graduate of Indiana University & Purdue University of Indianapolis with a B.S. in Communications.

Over his twelve years with the Phi Kappa Theta, Brother Harshbarger has led the production of the TEMPLE Magazine, the Fraternity’s online presence including the website and all Fraternity social media content. Brother Harshbarger has also spearheaded the Fraternity and special event communication while managing the Fraternity’s brand. Keith lives in Indianapolis with his wife Meredith, and daughter Paisley. His last day with Phi Kappa Theta Fraternity was Friday, April 12.

We are incredibly grateful for the years of dedication and service Keith has given our fellow brothers over the years. Our well wishes go out to him and his family during this exciting transition.

Brother Paul Allen Passes

INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA | Tuesday, October 16, 2018 – Phi Kappa Theta Fraternity is saddened to report the passing of our dear Brother, Paul G. Allen (Washington State University, ‘75). Brother Allen died from complications of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma on Monday afternoon. He was 65 years old.

Brother Allen was most recently with Phi Kappa Theta Brothers from across the country during the 2017 Biennial Convention, where he was honored with Phi Kappa Theta's Man of Achievement Award. As an introduction to his acceptance of the Award, Phi Kappa Theta created this video to highlight why we honored him as a Man of Achievement.

During his acceptance speech, he shared his belief that we were in an era where "Each of us will feel called by different causes and opportunities to serve and Phi Kap's emphasis on servant leadership reminds us that each one of us has the opportunity to make a difference." Paul Allen was without a doubt our most famous living Phi Kappa Theta brother. Brother Allen is famously known as a co-founder of Microsoft alongside Bill Gates. He left Microsoft back in 1983 due to health circumstances, devoting his time to philanthropy, space and tech ventures and sports. He was an avid sports fan, owning the Portland Trailblazers and the Seattle Seahawks. He is also Founder and Chairman of Vulcan Inc.

He was as driven in his philanthropy as he was in his business. Brother Allen never stopped asking the question “What could be?” and he was not afraid of tackling some of our most pressing issues – or even showing his love for a community by saving a professional sports team. He saw the world around him and continually looked for ways to make a difference and make it better. His Fraternity experience was so profound that he personally made possible return of our Phi Kappa Theta chapter to Washington State University and he provided resources to ensure that it would excel. It is a model we want to emulate.

Brother Allen was truly a role model servant leader who lived our motto: Give – expecting nothing thereof.

Paul’s ideas and actions have meant so much to the world. Allen spurred the rebirth of the Alpha Delta Chapter at Washington State University. In 1993 he joined together with a group of collegiate brothers who sought to reestablish Phi Kappa Theta at Washington State University. He led and funded construction of the chapter house, completed in 1996. Giving life to a Fraternity that continues to promote brotherhood, leadership and lifelong friendships just as it did for him. Paul’s vision and generosity opened the door for hundreds of Phi Kaps to enjoy the same comradery that he treasured from his days at Phi Kappa Theta.

Our condolences go out to his family, his corporate peers and to his own chapter, Washington Alpha Delta at Washington State University, who benefited from his generosity and support the most.
